IN CONVERSATION WITH …

Gavin Rubinstein and Mark McLeod

At the Elite Retreat, Gavin Rubinstein and Mark McLeod had a lively chat that showcased Gavin’s unstoppable drive to keep levelling up. With Mark as his mentor, Gavin talked about how he treats every deal like a chance to sharpen his game, seeing even the bumps in the road as fuel for his growth. He’s all about taking those lessons—whether they come from wins, losses, or even so-called "bad" mentors—and using them to polish his brand and boost his expertise.

Consistency is king

It’s not all about fancy suits and for agents just starting out, Gavin said learning to embrace the less glamorous side of real estate will do wonders for your career.

Step one: pick up the phone! Gavin was making up to 30 prospecting calls a day. "Learn to love the process, love making the calls," he said, underscoring the need to enjoy the grind as a key part of achieving long-term success. “The more frequently you check in with someone, the more they are going to trust you," Gavin said, stressing how important regular communication is for building trust with clients.

Never stop learning

Gavin sees every transaction, whether it's a win or a hurdle, as a chance to learn and get better. "I still feel that, like every transaction, whether it’s a sale, I could take something from it, adapt it to a little part of my brand and progress.”

While he’s been able to lean on Mark for advice, he’s also had his fair share of dud mentors, who have been equally instrumental in his career.

“I found bad mentors so much help early on. I learned so much about what not to do - particularly people at the other end of a business owner as a salesperson. So now, part of why I've got such good staff retention is I've got that salesperson perspective.”.

The Strength of relationships

Both Gavin and Mark highlighted how crucial strong relationships are in the industry. Gavin reckons his long-term success is down to the trust and loyalty he’s built with clients and colleagues.

“I still have a good relationship with the (Ray) White family. I started there as a 19 year old sales assistant and was getting huge success early on,” said Gavin. “I had a lot of people coming up and offering crazy things to leave the group, but my loyalty kept me engaged.” As Mark noted, "You see the flash, but you don’t see the fire," pointing out that Gavin's success is really fuelled by his hard work and commitment to these relationships behind the scenes.

SMART SNIPPETS

Home buyers prioritise lifestyle this Spring.
This year home buyers are more focused on a home’s lifestyle feature than anything else. While location and size still matter, buyers are increasingly wanting features that are more personal to them. Gen Z wants shorter commutes, Millennials crave backyards, and Boomers prefer modern builds. Interestingly, only 8 per cent would give up proximity to pubs and cafes.

Elite Retreat auction raises $30,000 for charity.
This year’s conference on Hayman Island, culminated in a hugely successful charity auction with funds going to Steve Carroll's Digital Live bike ride in Thailand, helping underprivileged children access education. Successful bidders won ‘joy’ flights with Red Bull Air Race World Champion pilot Matt Hall, and a host of great prizes including a 2013 bottle of Grange Hermitage and a 1.5m high stunning piece of aboriginal artwork.

Australia’s real estate industry is under siege from cybercriminals, and for agencies, it’s no longer a question of if they’ll be targeted, but when. Data shows that 1 in 6 real estate businesses have already fallen victim to scams, while 25% have suffered cyber security incidents. The high-value transactions and sensitive client data that agents handle make them an appealing target for cybercriminals. Find out how to stay one step ahead of scammers.
