10 skills every real estate agent must master
Entering the real estate field (commercial or residential) requires mastering a range of essential skills.
From understanding market dynamics to building strong networks and communicating effectively, these abilities help agents succeed in a competitive environment. Darren Krakowiak, founder of CRE Success, outlines 10 critical skills every real estate agent should develop, including analytical expertise, tech savviness, ethical conduct, and resilience.
These skills not only support agents in overcoming industry challenges but also ensure long-term professional growth.
Market knowledge and networking
"Understanding the market is the cornerstone of success in commercial real estate," says Darren. New agents must immerse themselves in local market trends, property types, and economic influences to provide insights that help clients make better-informed decisions.
Networking is also key: "Real estate is a people business, and the relationships you cultivate will significantly impact your career." Strong networks also lead to referrals, collaborations, and valuable advice.
Sales, negotiation, and communication
"Sales and negotiation are at the heart of commercial real estate transactions," explains Darren. Building a sales pipeline, identifying potential clients, and negotiating favourable terms are vital skills. Alongside this, effective communication is crucial. "You must clearly articulate your ideas, present properties persuasively, and negotiate deals successfully.
Ethical conduct and resilience
"Integrity is the foundation of a successful career in commercial real estate.” Transparency, accountability, and putting clients’ best interests first obviously builds trust and a strong reputation. Beyond that, resilience is a critical skill. "Deals can fall through, market conditions can change, and rejection is inevitable. Resilience enables you to bounce back from these challenges with determination."
ICYMI, last week, we reported on how generational differences shape the way people negotiate and engage with the property market.

SMART SNIPPETS
Land prices soar past everything else
Australian land prices are breaking records, with the national median hitting $366,510 after jumping 7.6% in just one year. Perth and Brisbane are leading the surge with increases of 38.6% and 21.2%. Land prices are rising three times faster than inflation and five times faster than building costs, pushing the dream of new home ownership further out of reach for many Australians.
Why real estate agents are prime targets for cyberattacks
Real estate agents hold sensitive client data, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals. With AI-driven cyberattacks on the rise, criminals can exploit vulnerabilities to steal personal and financial information, commit fraud, or execute phishing scams. The Australian Signals Directorate estimates the average cost of a cyber incident for small businesses is $49,600, an increase of 8% from the previous year.
