Rental reforms “unworkable”
The REIQ has hit out at new rental reforms, calling them “unworkable”. Under the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024, the Miles Government will attach rent increase limits to the property rather than the tenancy agreement, and allow tenants to ask for structural changes to a property and compel an owner to respond in a set timeframe. But REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says the reforms are “a radical departure from well-established tenancy law and while it may sound good on paper, it is unworkable in practice”. More here.
Australia’s population surges to 27 million
Immigration levels have reached a 70-year high, and Australia’s housing supply is under extreme pressure. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2098 new people arrived in Australia each day in the 12 months to September, but new home construction and rental markets can’t keep pace.
