Property values set new record

Australian property values soared 8 per cent in the 2023-2024 financial year, overcoming a significant slump from the year before. According to the CoreLogic Hedonic Home Value Index, homeowners now attract the equivalent of a $59,000 boost to the median home value, which has risen to $794,000. The quarterly rate of change hit a high of 3.3 per cent in mid 2023, but has since slowed to 1.8 per cent in the June quarter. More here.

A free mansion … What’s the catch?

The 1834-built Hood Mansion in Limerick, Pennsylvania, is being offered for free by the Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society, but there’s a significant catch: it must be moved to a new location, costing an estimated $US700,000 to $US1 million. The mansion, with its 17 rooms and rich history, faces demolition as the current owner plans to build a warehouse complex on the site. The Preservation Society is determined to save the property, having reached an agreement to allow its relocation before it's reduced to rubble.

On this day in 2005, the world witnessed the Live 8 concerts, a series of 10 concerts held across major cities like London, Philadelphia, and Tokyo, to raise awareness about poverty in Africa. Organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the concerts were part of a larger campaign aimed at persuading the G8 leaders to address global poverty. The concerts featured performances from prominent artists such as U2, Pink Floyd, Madonna, and Mariah Carey, with about 3B people singing along, either live or on TV.
