How William Yipâs Aspergerâs and people-first approach are redefining real estate success
William Yipâs journey from working in museums and art galleries to becoming a successful real estate agent is as unconventional as his approach to the industry.
Navigating the profession with Aspergerâs, William has built his business around empathy, problem-solving, and community involvement. As the founder of Team Yip and co-investor of First National Real Estate Collective in Wellington, New Zealand, he focuses on helping others rather than traditional sales metrics.
"Aspergerâs helps me problem-solve without getting bogged down by emotions. I know when my clients are stressed, and I genuinely want to help them. But I donât get emotionally overwhelmed by it, which lets me stay calm and focused.â
Aspergerâs as a source of strength
William said his Aspergerâs has shaped his approach to real estate, offering him a unique perspective in an industry often dominated by high-pressure sales tactics.
"Having Aspergerâs means I have empathy but no sympathy," he explains, allowing him to problem-solve without being weighed down by emotional stress. This detachment helps him guide clients through challenging situations, such as divorce or financial struggles, without becoming overwhelmed. "If I can stay calm, it helps them stay calm too," he says, reflecting how his condition has become a valuable asset in managing high-stress environments.
A focus on building people, not sales
Unlike many in real estate, William is not hyper-focused on closing deals or chasing commissions. Instead, heâs motivated by helping people, both his clients and his team members. "I donât get excited about houses, but I get excited about helping people," he says. This people-first mentality extends to his team, where he chooses to hire individuals with potential rather than top-tier professionals. "We donât hire from the top," William said, "I look for people at the start of their career or those who have been struggling in the industry but have potential."
Success measured by impact, not wealth
"Itâs not about Lamborghinis and fancy houses. Itâs about helping people.â This mindset has led William to become deeply involved in his community, supporting over 400 groups. His belief in giving back is central to his work philosophy: "The more you give, the more you get, and I believe the more you get, itâs because youâre giving.â Linda Huynh, who works alongside William, said he definitely does not fit the mould of a typical boss. "Heâs not driven by KPIs or traditional success metrics. Itâs all about levelling people up, both in their careers and their personal lives. He genuinely wants everyone around him to succeed.â
TOGETHER WITH EXPLORE PROPERTY
As Explore Property celebrates its 10th anniversary, founder Andrew Acton looks back on the brandâs growth from a single office to a network across Australia. He attributes the success to strong community ties and innovative communication techniques. âWeâve fully revamped our marketing suite and tools for our people, to cut through all of the jargon and all of the âsamenessâ.â
While the real estate industry evolves, Mr Acton believes key traits like ambition and determination still stand out as paramount and is looking ahead to the next decade and beyond. Moving forward, Explore Property plans to keep expanding by supporting others in reaching their goals while staying true to its values of transparency and teamwork.
SMART SNIPPETS
Property management becomes a key cog
The property management sector is more important than ever, now contributing 48 per cent of agency revenue according to a new report from MRI Software. Despite some challenges, 71 per cent of property managers are satisfied with their jobâs flexibility. Tech adoption is also high, with 76 per cent happy with their tools and 72 per cent seeing AI as a productivity booster.
Renters trade gyms for pet areas and happy hour
PMâs have their hands full in the US, with renters are ditching gyms and pools for cooler perks like pet turf, air filtration, and even happy hours (yes, you read that right). According to a new Zillow Rentals study, while good old off-street parking and in-unit laundry is still important, itâs all about finding the right mix of practical and social vibes. With an excess of new rentals hitting the market, agents are now offering sweet extras like free parking to tempt new tenants.
D&G luxury: from runway to residences
You've got the designer dress, now it's time to snag the address. Dolce & Gabbana has officially stepped into the world of real estate with their first-ever luxury residences at 888 Brickell, Miami's soon-to-be tallest skyscraper. This super stylish 1,049 ft tower will feature a five-star hotel and 259 custom residences ranging from US$3.5 million to $35 million. Expect high-fashion living at its finest, with a signature restaurant, 44 foot lap pool, a screening room and golf simulator, but of course.
