On our radar

Inflation rises again

According to the latest ABS data released yesterday, inflation has risen again, climbing 1 percent in the June quarter and 3.8 percent annually. Now, the big question is, will the RBA lift the cash rate next week? REIA President Leanne Pilkington says borrowers will need to be patient in waiting for a fall in interest rates, but they can be “reasonably sure” the RBA won't increase rates next week.

Meanwhile, in the New Zealand 🇳🇿

New Zealand property investors have made about $511 billion since 1991, according to economist Ed McKnight of Opes Partners. Using Reserve Bank data and Stats NZ's homeownership rates, Ed found that residential property value increased by $1.5 trillion over 30 years, with investors benefiting from about a third. This growth mirrors Australia's market but surpasses the UK and USA. ANZ economist Miles Workman noted the popularity of property investment due to its simplicity and leverage potential, while cautioning about future affordability and potential policy changes like a capital gains tax.
