When clients or team members move on: turning loss into growth

Every departure is a new beginning. Growth, change, and transition are all part of the journey Image: Getty
In real estate, departures are inevitable, whether it’s a valued client, a trusted team member, or a long-time business partner.
Instead of seeing these exits as losses, Adrian Knowles, CEO of Harcourts Australia, says real estate professionals can reframe them as milestones of growth, both for the person leaving and for themselves.
By understanding motivations, fostering open communication, and focusing on the impact made, agents can turn these transitions into powerful learning moments.
Growth, not goodbye
"When we reflect on why someone leaves, we not only gain insights into their motivations but also uncover ways to evolve ourselves." Not every departure is about dissatisfaction. Often, it's simply about new challenges and fresh goals. Real estate is an industry built on evolution, where both professionals and clients are constantly shifting gears, says Adrian.
“This is especially true in real estate, a dynamic industry where both professionals and clients often evolve, creating new goals and aspirations.” Instead of resisting change, agents can use these moments to refine their approach and stay ahead of industry shifts.
Listening is your superpower
"These conversations not only show the other party that you value their feelings and experiences but also help foster relationships that may remain positive long after your professional paths diverge."
Empathy and active listening go a long way in handling transitions professionally. Instead of frustration, the focus should be on asking: What’s next for them? How did I contribute to their journey? What can I do better?
“The key to understanding why people leave lies in empathetic, active listening. By taking the time to have honest conversations, free of judgment or frustration, you can uncover perspectives that are invaluable to your growth as a professional.”
Adrian says a thoughtful approach can leave the door open for future collaboration or referrals.
The journey is the legacy
"Be proud of the role you played in shaping someone's career or life." Whether it's a former colleague or a past client, the way people remember working with you matters. Real estate success isn’t just about closing deals - it’s about leaving a lasting impact.
“When someone leverages the skills, knowledge, or confidence you’ve helped them gain to pursue new opportunities, they carry your impact with them, and that’s something to celebrate, not resent.” Importantly, when people move on with a positive experience, they’re far more likely to send business your way in the future.

How to win more listings
Winning in real estate isn’t just about securing listings; it’s about mastering the art of negotiation. Ray White’s Bianca Denham believes agents who tailor their pitch and prioritise relationship-building have a distinct advantage over competitors relying on one-size-fits-all sales tactics. Understanding both your own goals and your client's unique needs is key to standing out in a crowded market and closing more deals.

In a rare trend reversal, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Detroit, Michigan, have emerged as the only two US metro areas among the top 50 where buying a home is currently cheaper than renting, according to the Realtor.com January 2025 Rental Report.

Sleep is the the secret weapon for real estate success
Real estate agents know business never sleeps - but they definitely should. Studies from the Mayo Clinic reveal adults need at least seven hours of quality sleep nightly to boost productivity, sharpen decision-making, and improve stress management; all critical skills for navigating tricky negotiations and hectic market conditions. Better sleep also supports emotional resilience and healthier client relationships, making it a powerful strategy for agents aiming to stay at peak performance.
