TRUE OR FALSE: Sydney's first proper hospital was built without the government paying a cent. The contractors were actually handed a monopoly on importing rum instead. And the answer is β¦ True. The Crown had refused to fund a hospital, so in 1810 Governor Macquarie let a syndicate of merchants build it in exchange for the exclusive right to import 45,000 gallons of rum.
The workmanship was shocking β roof and beams needed fixing almost straight away β and despite that these buildings are still standing. One wing is now NSW Parliament House. A structurally compromised, leaky building funded entirely by a liquor cartel? Makes perfect sense that it became NSW Parliament House π via Museums of History NSW. |
